Description
At our Friday Essay Workshops, your kids can expect:
1. Friendly Check-Ins
We care a lot! We like to ask our students about their passions and interests outside our Zoom room. Even a quick, “How was your day?” brings smiles to our students’ (sometimes tired) faces.
2. Engaging Games
To warm up our brains, we like to start with a fun, word-related challenge. Games such as Wordle, Boggle, Charades, and even Jenga-bulary are student favorites.
3. Quick and Meaningful Lessons
Kids love our virtual classes because we don’t give boring lectures. Instead, we engage kids through student-centered activities. Our teaching is focused on delivering concise mini-lessons and essay models, after which kids get to…
4. Practice, Practice, Practice
Students learn by doing. We spend class time actually formulating, organizing, and drafting our essays (our goal is one per class). All our students type their work on a Google Document, so we see how they are doing in real time.
5. Breakout Rooms
Since we have a range of writers (5-8) we allow time for individual consultation at Zoom’s breakout rooms. This allows us to give personalized instruction for those who need it.
6. Reading Aloud and Feedback
The end of each session is reserved for sharing. Students read their work aloud, which helps them become stronger self-editors. We are super generous with our feedback – we give kudos after their “public speech” and write constructive comments and suggestions on their Google Documents.
Phew! Yes, we do all these great things in just 2 hours. The dynamic pace and personalized instruction are why our students love our sessions and are always hungry for more!
